I bought the Pevear/Volokhonsky translation for the Kindle because my ancient Penguin copy has a small font that's tiring on the eyes. What War and Peace is, I suppose, it the biggest and baddest attempt at experimental/historical fiction ever attempted. As I've mentioned elsewhere, I opted to use the Richard Pevear/Larissa Volokhonsky translation of War and Peace for numerous reasons. "As long as 'War and Peace' " is a comparison understood even by people who have never cracked its covers. There are essentially twelve English translations (or versions) of War and Peace to date, (if you count Bromfield's so-called "Disney Version" and Komroff's radical abridgement of the Garnett translation -- see my notes below.) As I have already alluded to, abridgements of the work are on the market and I cannot generally .. I chose the Pevear/Volokhonsky by the way. The Stieg Larsson books, the Pevear and Volokhonsky translation of “War and Peace,” and Laurie Sheck's “A Monster's Notes,” to name just a few (many more from his portfolio are delightfully catalogued on his Web site). With an occasional break, it took me five months to finish the 800 pages of “Anna Karenina”, I probably should have expected not to enjoy “Anna Karenina” very much, because when I read “War and Peace”, I enjoyed the war and was often bored by the peace.
